Black colleges in the United States, include public and private sectors, 2 year and 4 year institutions, community colleges and medical schools
Black colleges and universities represent and symbolize the struggle for independence, respect, equality and freedom. Before the Civil war, black students were mostly excluded from higher education at predominantly white colleges and universities. This led to the foundation of more black colleges with a specific mission to provide educational opportunities for the blacks in the U.S. Admission to black colleges is not restricted to any one particular group of people although they strive to implement programs and deliver services focused on the needs of students who have limited access to education. Masters and PhD degrees in fields such as agriculture, business administration, computer science, history, law, mathematics, nursing and nutrition to name a few and graduate programs similar to other schools are offered by black colleges. Black colleges do not leave any stone unturned in providing world class, superior quality teaching, education and research embedded in core values like leadership, diversity and scholarship.
Apart from imparting a great education, black colleges also give students a chance to experience a slice of history, culture and varied ethnicities. Black colleges can be rightfully defined as equality minded colleges that cater to the African American population and also welcome students of all backgrounds. The application process for black colleges is quite similar to applying to other colleges. The ethnic makeup of the student body in a black college puts it on a pedestal a little above any traditional college. School spirit being another of its salient feature, black colleges are cleared and sanitized of any racial tensions and stereotypic thoughts of what people might think. A great place to learn- how to lead and rise from the dust, black colleges predominantly cater to students with free minds who are open to change and talk about solutions to make things better.
