BOCES New York

BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) is fundamentally a partnership of the county’s school districts and is particularly designed to dedicate the best available educational experience to learners of all age groups and abilities. Originally formulated by the New York State legislature, BOCES succeeded phenomenally in providing school districts with a program of shared educational services. This program was conjured primarily for the small rural school districts that were then able to combine their resources to provide educational services that otherwise would have been out of reach, uneconomical, unavailable and inefficient.

BOCES membership is not open to the so called Big Five City school districts including New York, Rochester, Syracuse, Yonkers and Buffalo. A district that has once attained the BOCES membership is barred from withdrawal and is obligated to comply with the annual share of rental, administrative and other facility expenses. BOCES services are designed when 2 or more school districts have similar needs and requirements that can be mutually shared by a program. By pooling resources and sharing costs, BOCES poses cost cutting opportunities to school districts. These services are customized and tailor made thereby offer flexibility to meet individual needs. BOCES is officially governed by the Board of Education who is rightfully responsible to take any decision pertaining to financial, curricular and similar areas. BOCES services can be purchased every year by school districts and is also features as a no taxing authority.

Every BOCES program varies in nature and is designed to suit the needs and abilities of the local school districts. These programs are instructional whereby students are served with classroom services and programs. Literacy programs for adult learners, physical and occupational therapy for disabled students’ and vocationally technical programs for high school students are some of the instructional programs imparted to students. BOCES is a program that strives to suffice the needs of two or more districts who have clubbed together share and pool resources thereby leading to cutting costs and making things available that would have otherwise been difficult to attain. This helps districts to become self sufficient that eventually leads to upliftment and generic growth of the people.
